  Double Shift

Carolyn Adams

I’m mired
in long shadow,
colorless,
pulled hard
at a mitered seam.

Coffee steams from a thermos cup.

Stiff arms flex
in a sweat-stained shirt,
smell of cigarettes
and diesel.

Time and a half,
time and a quarter.

The sun pushes on
just to fall down again.
