  Lake Reminder

John Grey

The lake exists for the cure of feet
too long in walking,
It's here for the glimmer of its glass,
the patient reflection that ripples away
the worst of all this living.
It carves its blueness out of
thickest forest, hardest clay,
so that calmness has a voice,
anger an antidote
Children splash in its waters,
heed the coolness of its teachings.
The rest of us stand on its banks,
cocooned by its willing sentry,
or row out gently to its center
for our continuous protection.
