  Heavy

Shanna Trenholm

We were always leaving
one soggy town
for another
eventually I had to leave
you

you
became like pocket lint
ubiquitous, compressed
your expression echoing
the woolen Seattle sky

I thought I had no choice
but to carry your weight
to the next damp city
instead of peeling you off
like an old winter coat

before I knew you
I never realized how heavy lint could be
