  The Need For Carp

Susan H. Case

after Gerald Stern

Grass carp.  Monster fish, eating machine.
Hard to be a star when you live to eat
your weight.  Each day, surfeit in an imperiled
lake of flora-fragments that clog water into
strands of tangle formed from each tiny bit
of drift and broken stem, a strangle of vine –
hydrilla – caught in propeller, boat trailer.  Weed
that can’t be killed.  Except by cold or fly or beetle
or the heroic sterile carp.  Voraciously impelled
to trim the snaggle in each channel.
