Vectors of Change

The heron on the dock at high tide stares
over the edge at conventions of minnows
it cannot reach and entertains an idea
of the endless delicious populations
of the sea beyond shallows, and the strain
of longing for fathoms and dinner,
the singular pleasures imagined
of what could be the world's longest swallow,
that focused thought is recorded in notepads
unknown to the heron who is changing
the future by wishing and far off in the unborn
of the unborn, in the endless unmentionable
heron suppositions of futurity,
tiny eventual femurs stretch out, invisible
transparent bones of the neck lengthen
